Māori Ora Mauri Ora - O Tātou Uara
Māori Ora, Mauri Ora is a value-based model which guides our mahi in Māori Public Health.
This model was developed by a rōpū of kaumātua and kuia from Ngāti Whātua, Raukura Hauora o Tainui, and Te Whānau o Waipareira, representing mana whenua and mātāwaka in wider Tāmaki Makaurau. Led by Pio Jacobs, the rōpū included Dame June Mariu, John Marsden, Naida Glavish, Tukuoroirangi Morgan, and Timi Maipi.
Through collaboration and wānanga, ‘Māori Ora, Mauri Ora’ was born. In its early years, questions were raised regarding the intentional placement of ‘Māori’ before ‘Mauri.’ In Te Ao Māori, mauri precedes all – including tangata Māori. However, kaumātua and kuia explained that in this model, mauri is positioned as a korowai which envelops, protects, and nurtures ‘Māori Ora.’
Eight values comprise the korowai of Māori Ora, Mauri Ora: Tika, Tautoko, Whenua, Mātauranga, Manaaki, Aroha, Tangihanga, and Pono
Why is this important to us?
‘Māori Ora, Mauri Ora’ is a crucial pou at Hāpai; connecting us to our whakapapa, guiding our present efforts, and continually shaping the future of Hāpai te Hauora.
Importantly, this model is a practical way to embed tikanga Māori into the core activities of public health.
How Hāpai uses Māori Ora, Mauri Ora
Māori Ora, Mauri Ora is a versatile model and a key tool in all aspects of our work including advocacy, skills development, health promotion, and community engagement.
Building and maintaining relationships is a fundamental part of Māori Public Health. These relationships exist within the sector, with central and local government, businesses, and community organisations. Māori Ora, Mauri Ora dictates how we build and develop such relationships, ensuring Hāpai upholds the reason for which we were created: to be the eyes, ears, and voice for whānau Māori in Public Health.
What we envision for Māori Ora, Mauri Ora
Within Hāpai, Māori Ora, Mauri Ora is a tool which ensures we represent Māoridom in its purest form. Significant barriers continue to inhibit the realisation of ‘Māori Ora’ and Māori health equity at all levels. The guiding values in this model encourage our active participation in advocacy and enable both adaptability and longevity for Hāpai as an organisation.
We welcome all to use Māori Ora, Mauri Ora as a model to guide their efforts. Its values are applicable in all sectors and can contribute to unity and momentum towards positive and equitable outcomes for all.
