For Mental Health Awareness Week Hāpai te Hauora partnered with Mental Health Foundation to run various workshops across Auckland. These workshops encompassed this year’s theme – Let nature in, strengthen your wellbeing – Mā te taiao kia whakapakari tōu oranga – through incorporating matauranga of Atua Matua.

We collaborated with Māori Movement, Whenua Warrior Trust, Health Families, Tamariki Ora and Ngāti Whātua Orākei to facilitate workshops that encouraged the community to slow down and embrace ancient traditional Māori methods for being well. These methods included techniques like whakamoemite, maara kai and pure, as well as bringing together stories from the community about their maternity journeys. Recognising how various techniques our tūpuna used and acknowledging Atua Matua helped us to connect with nature, to strengthen our wellbeing.
